Day Trip to Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello | Tour Review

Jun 14, 2022

If you find yourself anywhere near Naples or Sorrento for a couple of days, you definitely must visit the Amalfi Coast. There is so much to see in the area, we decided to take a day tour of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast!

MyTour informed us about the meeting time which was 8:00am, and it was just 15 minutes from my hotel: the group arrived, and we were on our way on time. The bus also stopped to get some other passengers and once we were all together, our guide Isabella presented herself and the driver Francesco.

Our itinerary for the day was made clear by our guide, it included Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello and lunch also.

One-hour drive and it was time for us to stop in Sorrento, the first town we would visit. The road was full of tunnels and after the last one, we could see the white cliffs that span the entire coast. The mountains were called “Monti Lattari” or “Milky Mountains” because of the large amount of milk produced in the area and the color they have. No wonder, Italy has a lot of dairy products produced all around it.

View of Sorrento

We made a quick stop in a roadside balcony that offered a beautiful view of Sorrento, just a few kilometers from Vico Equense. From this spot, we could see the entire city and also appreciate its unique geography.

Our guide talked about Sorrento and its history, and then guided us on what we could do in 45 minutes of our free time. By her advice, we decided to see the balcony between the monastery and the hotel and the Cathedral. We walked about 6 or 7 minutes from the city center where we dropped off to get to this balcony with a beautiful view of the Bay of Sorrento. It was amazing, with the city docks directly below and the imposing cliffs hanging just over the sea. Then we walked about 10 minutes back to the city center where stands the Cathedral, an impressive building. We also took some minutes to admire the bell tower. Then it was time to get to our next stop, Positano.

Lunch in Positano

We arrived in Positano in just 30 minutes drive. Positano is a beautiful town perched on a cliff over the sea. We walked on the main street, so we wouldn’t get lost in the narrow passageways and stairs that make up the town. After our stop in Positano we headed for lunch in this restaurant located between Positano and Amalfi. The restaurant was in a perfect location, the cliffs overlooking the sea and this beautiful balcony made our lunch the best part of our day.

Our lunch was a mixed salad followed by a simple but tasty pummarola pasta with some mozzarella on top and a lemon sponge cake for dessert. It was yummy!

Then we drove for 10 minutes and found ourselves in Amalfi. We got to the center, and we had one hour to explore on our own. Isabella suggested that we see the Cathedral, so we did, and It did not disappoint. This place is filled with frescoes, paintings, sculptures, sequenced tiles, and fantastic architecture. We were obsessed with the Cathedral! We spent our entire free time there, the time passed by so quickly and we didn’t realize that it was now time to leave Amalfi…

Last stop in Ravello

Our last town to visit was Ravello, which was further inland and higher up than the other towns. Our free time to explore Ravello was 40 minutes, our guide Isabella proposed visiting one of the two villas turned museums in town. So we did! We got ourselves to see the Villa Rufolo. It was a 7 euro entrance fee and well worth it. There are some spectacular gardens, and everywhere you turn, you can only see amazing views. The sea was behind it, and there is also a tower that you can climb to get an unrivaled view of the coast and the mountains. We spent about 15 minutes up there, just staring, and we also took pictures. That was how our day ended, and it was perfect! It was time now time to head back to our drop-off location in Naples.
