Full Description

The Cupola Tour is the ultimate Santa Maria del Fiore experience, surely one of the three things to do in Florence you can’t miss. Selecting our exclusive Cupola guided tour, you will calmly climb the steps to reach the Florence cathedral terrace and get really close to the Brunelleschi dome.

A unique opportunity to climb the Florence Duomo

Until recent times the access to the Duomo terrace area was restricted, and only during particular days of the year citizens could come. Today, the City of Florence has opened the Santa Maria del Fiore Cupola for tourists. This decision has been really appreciated - now everybody can benefit from this extraordinary view. But if you are on a do it yourself vacation, you simply will not get in. There’s no other way to enter this area, the access is permitted only upon guided tours.

To get in the Florence Dome you’ll need to be a little patient, considering there are 463 steps to climb. But do not worry, being there it is surely worth the hassle. You’ll reach the northern Santa Maria del Fiore terraces passing through a secret passage located behind a door called Porta della Mandorla. Once you’ll be there, you never forget. You will enjoy the marvelous 360° sight of the Florence old city center, being at an average altitude of 30 meters.

The miracle of the Brunelleschi dome

Then, the most exciting part of this tour is represented by the Brunelleschi dome itself, a true architectural ‘miracle’. Being still nowadays the widest brick dome ever realized, it shows an external diameter of 54.8 meters and an inner diameter of 45.5 meters.

In 2020 the masterpiece made by Filippo Brunelleschi will be 600 years old. During these centuries the Florence dome has resisted earthquakes and wars, history and time.

Brunelleschi started to design the octagonal dome in 1418, but the project was accepted only in 1420 by the Opera di Santa Maria committee. In this way, the ‘cupolone’ had been finished only fourteen years later, in 1434, and the cathedral of Florence was consecrated by Pope Eugene IV on 25th March 1436.

The real miracle behind the dome construction relies upon the figure of the architect, whose complete name was Filippo di Ser Brunellesco Lapi. His personal history determines the rising of the figure of the modern architect, mixing executive skills and intellectual approach. The strangest thing is that as a young man Brunelleschi received a vast education, which included notions of jewelry, optics, and metalworking. But he did not have any architectural training before presenting the project that would have won. In other words, Fillippo Brunelleschi was a trained goldsmith and had never built anything in his life before building the masterpiece that astonishingly still stands today. Although that may sound crazy, gold smithery helped him a lot. Because it marries aesthetics and practicality, which Brunelleschi used, among his other studies, to find the solution for the construction of the dome.

By the time Brunelleschi was born, the cathedral had been under construction for 80 years with no solution. As the building of the cathedral continued and had grown larger than the original plans, the question still remained. How would they build the dome-shaped roof? No one had any idea how it would or could be done, including the artists who conceptualized it. But Florentines were determined to outdo the other cities in Tuscany, no matter how long it took.

The Cupola tour extends on the terraces of the Duomo and represents an extraordinary experience. First of all, you will have the possibility to admire the precious marble details of the façade. Then, at this altitude, you can have an extraordinary view at the Florence center.

Being there, on the Northern terraces of the Florence cathedral, is a unique privilege. First, just consider that this area had been closed to the public for centuries. Then, please remind that only a few dozen people a day can enjoy this breathtaking view!
