The first documents where the word Chianti is quoted are dated back between 1200 and 1300. Nowadays the area denominated Chianti Classico consists of seven municipalities. San Casciano, Greve and Barberino Tavarnelle are located in the province of Florence. Radda, Castellina, Gaiole, and Castelnuovo Berardenga are located in the province of Siena. The Chianti Classico DOCG is the typical red wine made here. It contains mostly Sangiovese grapes (80%-100%). Other red berried grapes coming from local varieties are admitted in the classical Chianti production to the maximum extent of 20%.
